Eco-Friendly Grease Trap Waste Rendering

Environmental Blog

As a restaurant owner or manager, you understand the need to have the grease trap cleaned regularly. If you have a small unit that sits on the floor, you may have an employee clean it an dump the waste into a barrel that is also used to hold the oil and sludge from the deep fryers. This waste is often sold to a rendering company. When you have an in-ground grease trap, you will need to have it pumped out. The pumping company either renders the waste itself or sells it to a render. To avoid having your waste ending up in a landfill somewhere, you need to make sure that whoever ends up with it will use it for eco-friendly purposes. Here are the common uses for the rendered products.

Fuel

As the price of crude oil increases, and the environment is damaged by its processing into the different fuels for transportation and heating, alternatives need to be found and used. The solid portion of grease trap waste is one alternative. Once the water has been removed from the waste, the remaining grease and food particles can be turned into bio-diesel fuel to be used in vehicles that have been manufactured or altered to run on it. It is also possible for the waste to be heated in a way that will allow it to be used in fuel cells that generate electricity.

Compost

Another option for the dewatered grease trap waste is to add it to large compost piles. As the organisms eat and digest the organic waste in the pile it is turned into fertilizer. This can be applied to golf courses, parks, and athletic fields to feed the grass and help it grow. In addition, it can be bagged and sold to be used in residential flower beds. Finally, large-scale farms may buy the waste and use it in their own compost bins or buy the composted fertilizer to use on their fields to increase their grain yields for feeding livestock.

It is part of your responsibility as a business owner to do all you can to protect the environment. Recycling should not only be done for the garbage that gets tossed into bins, but should also be done with your grease trap waste. With a bit of research you should be able to find a company that will come pump or clean out the grease trap and make sure that the waste products are not really wasted. Contact a company, like Tierra Environmental & Industrial Services, for more help.

It is Important to Protect the Only Earth we Have

When I was a young child, I loved playing outdoors. We had a large forest right behind our house that my brothers and sisters and I would pay hide-and-seek and other fun games in. There were little squirrels and other animals in the forest that I loved watching. One day, as a teenager, I was watching a documentary about how forests all over the world that are natural habitats for animals are being destroyed to provide resources for humans, and I then developed a passion for protecting the environment. I have learned many tips and tricks for helping the environment over the years, and I am eager to share them with others on my new blog!
